G. Lalo offers stationery for modern tastes, but with classical roots dating back to last century. G. Lalo offers a range from modern note cards to laid finish paper originating from a centuries-old mill and made with the same craftsmanship and attention to quality as in historic times.

G. Lalo has become famous throughout the years as the stationery of choice both in Paris high society and the royal courts of Europe, such as Sweden, Holland, Belgium and Monaco.

The Founding of G. Lalo:

Georges Lalo came to Paris as a youth around the turn of the century. He worked hard, and attended drawing and sketching classes at night.

During World War I, he decided he wanted he wanted to found his own company. Shortly after he was discharged by the military, he rented a modest studio and bought second-hand stamping machinery. G. Lalo was founded in Paris and has remained there ever since.

G. Lalo has remained at its heart a small, personal stationery maker, retaining its French identity and style over the years. Keeping the base of the company in the heart of Paris was important to Georges Lalo.

Paris is the city of fashion, and the starting place for many trends and styles. G. Lalo has always been situated close to luxury Parisian stationers and department stores. They were among the core of his earliest clients, and remain so to this day.

George Lalo’s nephew introduced the U.S. market to the stationery by holding shows at prestigious New York hotels such as the Pierre and the Plaza. As in the most elite French couture, the bespoke stationery clientele were shown samples of papers and then placed their orders. Stationery was hand-engraved, and each sheet meticulously examined.

The G. Lalo Product Range

G. Lalo offer a large range of the finest cotton, verge and laid papers in Europe and now they are available in Australia.
Papierfabriek – A 400 year tradition of paper making:

Most of the paper used in G. Lalo stationery is made at Papierfabriek Schut in the Netherlands.

Established in 1618 during the Golden Age of Dutch Masters, the “De Veentjes” paper mill was located in the Veluwe region of the Netherlands. The rapid currents of the Heelsum brook were used to operate the mill.

In 1710 the Schut family bought the mill and continued to make quality papers for almost three hundred years. In 1998 the mill was acquired by Papeteries de Clairefontaine. Established in 1618, the Schut mill current produces stationery and other fine papers on a hybrid machine
Schut Paper Mill

The Schut mill currently produces stationery, fine art paper and non-banknote security papers on a hybrid machine, which can produce both mould made and fourdrinier.

The mill still uses pure water from the nearby Heelsum brook for a fine, acid-free paper; rag content is supplied by the best cotton linters for a perfect finish.

Though the machinery is modern the mill still radiates a traditional atmosphere, applying the same degree of still and care in paper-making as it did in historic times.

The quality of its paper has enabled the mill to prosper over the centuries. Once, one of many small paper mills in the Veluwe area, Papierfabriek Schut is the only specialty grade producer that still remains.
