THE TRUE MOLESKINE STORY

Moleskine is the legendary notebook that has held the inspirations and ideas of everyone from Van Gogh, Picasso and Hemingway to famed author, Bruce Chatwin. Artists, authors, and geniuses of all variety have long appreciated the simplicity and superior functionality of these notebooks.

Today we associate Moleskine with a brand created by Modo & Modo. This has not always been the case. The truth behind the craze is that a moleskine is actually a term used to describe any (typically black) leather bound notebook with an elastic closure strap and expandable pocket. This notebook style originated in France where a small French bookbinder supplied the Parisian elite and avant-garde for years with these journals made from the finest French paper. A trusted and handy travel companion, the notebook held invaluable sketches, notes, stories, and ideas that would one day become famous paintings or the pages of beloved books.

However in the 1980’s this French bookbinder no longer produced this style of notebook, the moleskine. Now more recently the Moleskine brand has taken the reins however other fine French stationery companies continue the French tradition of this style complimented with the finest paper quality.

So…. the name moleskine can be used to describe any notebook of this style whether it be produced by Moleskine (the brand), Rhodia (French webnotebooks) or another fine stationer. At Inscriber we have bought direct to you a range of moleskine style books from Moleskine and Rhodia.
