The Beauty of a Thank You Note

“Every time we remember to say “thank you”, we experience nothing less than heaven on earth.” Sarah Ban Breathnach

Nothing can be remembered more fondly than the receiving of personal thank you note. Long after you have written and sent it the recipient still delights in the elegance and courtesy such correspondence evokes.

Simplicity is the essence of a thank you note. It is more often the inscribing and choice of the words and the soft tactile paper that makes the most powerful statement of friendship and respect.

Many occasions can call for a thank you. The beautiful set of crystal glasses received as a wedding gift. A diamond tennis bracelet gifted for a special anniversary. That delightful dinner party spent mingling with old friends and new acquaintances. Yet sometimes it is those unexpected thank you’s that are the most special of all. A phone call from a friend interstate or overseas. The postcard sent while on a honeymoon. That homemade strawberry jam given at Christmas.

It is however not the occasion that is important but rather the promptness that counts. Do not wait to say your thanks rather send it on fine paper with a hand written note as soon as you can. If you are delayed in sending your thank you there is no need to acknowledge this in the note.

Things to remember

Sometimes it can seem a bit monotonous to sit down and write the same thank you’s to different friends. A great idea is to follow the following guidelines:

  • Refer to the gift by name and description when thanking the person who gave it to you. When receiving a gift of money it is not necessary to acknowledge the amount, rather reference their “generous gift”.
  • Acknowledge their choice of perfect gift and it’s meaning and significance to you.
  • Allude to your future use of the gift and perhaps a future meeting with the giver.

Keeping the right paper and tools on hand for thank you correspondence can make it an easy task to stay on top of.
