In 3500 B.C in Uruk, Mesopotamia, calame was used to write cuneiform signs on clay tablets. Later, in 2200 B.C in Egypt people began to write on papyrus. Reeds from the Nile were sliced into very thin strips, then dried under heavy weights. At the same time, ink was made by mixing lampblack with oil.
